Tenjikan
(Exhibition Hall)
A core facility of the museum, Tenjikan features a reception area and museum shop with a special exhibition room on the first floor, and permanent exhibition rooms on the second and third floors. The permanent exhibits showcase “The Interconnection Between Humans and Nature in Tateyama.” The special exhibition room hosts two thematic exhibitions about Tateyama annually.
The Stage of Tateyama Worship
The distinctive natural environment of Tateyama has served as a backdrop for faith throughout its long history. Here, we explore Tateyama’s nature from two perspectives: “Industrial Activities that Supported Daily Life” and “Distinctive Landscapes that Gave Birth to Faith.” We highlight representative examples of Tateyama’s flora and terrain that are deeply connected to these aspects.
The World of Tateyama Worship
For over 1,300 years, Tateyama has nurtured a unique faith rooted in nature. The mountain itself has been worshipped as a divine being, and over time, it became revered as a sacred place embodying the Buddhist concepts of hell and paradise. This section introduces the culture and history of Tateyama Worship through materials such as Tateyama Mandalas and Buddhist ritual objects.
Special Exhibitions
Special exhibitions are held twice a year. In addition to Tateyama Worship, these exhibitions explore various aspects of the interconnection between people and Tateyama, including literature, modern mountaineering, and natural sciences.
Collection Highlights
Our museum collects and preserves a wide range of materials related to Tateyama. The collection includes folk artifacts associated with Tateyama Worship, some of which are nationally designated as Important Cultural Properties. Items related to modern mountaineering are also included.
