In the early Meiji period, British diplomats and scholars and engineers invited by the government compiled information from their travels through Japanese cities and mountainous regions and published a guidebook for foreigners entitled ‘HANDBOOK FOR TRAVELERS IN JAPAN’ Many foreigners took the book with them as they travelled around Japan. There are many descriptions of Mount Tateyama, including analyses of nature, itineraries, places to stay, and places of interest. This exhibition introduces the historical background of the British visits to Mount Tateyama, what they saw there, and how they recorded their experiences.
